This review- the final story about the new line of affordable smartphones according to LG. Leon is the youngest and, accordingly, the cheapest model. It is clear that a budget device is characterized by endless compromises, but it is gratifying that the device, despite all this, still received the spirit and functionality of not only its older brothers, but also the company’s flagship.

Equipment here is expectedly simple and sparse. Includes AC adapter, Micro USB cable and accompanying documentation. It’s a pity, of course, that LG didn’t include at least a bad, but still wired, headset in the package. Let's be honest, consumers who buy devices of this level are often not demanding of sound quality. And getting a bonus in the form of headphones is always nice. Still, the device has support for memory cards for downloading music, and, in addition, is equipped with an FM radio, which does not work without headphones connected. In general, we saved in the wrong places.

Design

Unfortunately, the hero of today's review is an exception from the entire line and does not have a truly curved screen, which we can see in Spirit or. The front surface here is completely flat without any radius of curvature, which the manufacturer proudly talks about in older devices.

The protective glass has a real, truly effective oleophobic coating.

According to my observation, the screen protection from the accumulation of fingerprints and dust is implemented even better than in the older and more expensive one. Real miracles!

Above the display is a front camera with a distance sensor. But there was no place to install an ambient light sensor. Instead, a function has been implemented to switch the backlight to a minimum level at night, that is, according to a schedule. You can live with this, and even quite well.


The touch system control keys are part of the interface, so the area under the screen is empty. There is only a decorative strip of plastic and nothing else.

The sides of the smartphone are empty, since all the physical buttons, according to the good old tradition of the manufacturer, are located behind the back.

Moreover, in Leon the keys are part of a detachable cover, while in other devices they were located directly on the body. In other words, if the back cover is removed, the only way to turn off the device is by removing the battery.

The main camera is located in the center of the back side, and the LED flash is located nearby.

Under the cover there is a slot for Micro SD memory cards and other internals of the device.

The pride of the company is its removable battery. I don’t know why users need this functionality, but LG presents it in a positive way. Under the battery there are slots for installing Micro SIM cards.

Each SIM card can connect to 3G networks, but they cannot do this at the same time.

This is set programmatically in the settings either on the first or second card. The only way.

The audio output is on the top edge of the device, and the universal Micro USB connector is on the bottom. Each end has its own microphone.

For me personally, the device is too small, both in size and screen. I have long been accustomed to larger 5 - 5.5-inch devices. However, those who used, say, the iPhone 4, will be pleasantly pleased with the increased screen area.

There are expectedly three color versions of the device available on the market and all have rather romantic names: metallic black, silky white and shining gold. Each of these variations looks original, so the use of a loud name can be considered justified.

Display

The smartphone has an IPS matrix with a diagonal of 4.5 inches and a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. The pixel density per square inch is 218 pixels, which is enough for comfortable work. Individual pixels, of course, can be seen, but during normal use at a distance of 30-50 cm from the eyes, everything looks clear and smooth.

I would like to note that the screen sandwich is made using In-Cell Touch technology, that is, without an air gap between the glass and the LED panel. In fact, you get the feeling that you are touching directly the icons and links of the interface, and not the glass, which is often at a noticeable distance from the LED substrate.
Viewing angles are expectedly good. IPS (in-plane switching) at its finest! What else can you say?

A little about the “brains” of the device. SoC Mediatek MT6582 (32 bit) is installed here. The processor is made using 28-nanometer technology and includes 4 Cortex-A7 cores. This chip is quite old (released at the end of 2013) and is comparable in performance to Ndivia Tegra 3.

I would like to say something about memory separately. Only 4 GB are allocated for data storage, of which 2.43 GB are occupied by the system.

As a result, only 1.56 GB is available to the user, and that is only if unnecessary content in the form of pre-installed applications is removed.

The rest of the picture looks like this. There is no NFC, the OTG protocol is not supported, and the front camera is still with VGA resolution - in general, it has all the charms of a real budget device in terms of additional technical goodies.

It is clear that against the backdrop of all this, you should not expect breakthrough performance from a smartphone. The interface of the proprietary shell does not slow down, since it is well optimized for the built-in hardware, but the device still likes to think when launching applications and switching between them. Since there are no stutters or any errors, even taking into account the sluggishness of the smartphone, using it is still more pleasant than not.

The results of system tests are clearly presented below.

The international modification of LG Leon differs from the one sold on the domestic market as follows. Firstly, it supports LTE Cat 4 networks. Next comes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 processor with a clock speed of 1.2 GHz. Then RAM for a whole 1 GB and 8 GB allocated for data storage. For some reason, in the foreign version the battery capacity was slightly reduced to 1820 mAh. That's probably all.

Photo

The main camera here is represented by a 5-megapixel module; accordingly, the output images are obtained in a resolution of 2560 x 1920 pixels. There is autofocus, which, in general, works correctly.


The quality of the final images cannot but rejoice.

With sufficient daylight, the pictures turn out really good, and on a smartphone screen it looks just great.

There are no fatal errors in the automatic determination of exposure, there are practically no dark places or disappearance into an incomprehensible colored fog, as often happens in budget cameras. For the most part, everything is fine. In no case can you compare the capabilities of the LG Leon with flagships, but for its money it shoots well.

The only conditions where Leon did not perform at its best, to put it mildly, were night shooting.

The photos turn out very blurry, with huge noise and all that. Taking pictures with a smartphone at night is not at all an option.

The device is capable of recording videos in a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30 fps. The quality of the video is not bad, but, of course, it is far from the best. For non-artistic photography, Leon's capabilities will be quite sufficient. Example below.

Software shell

I would like to devote a few paragraphs to the proprietary software add-on. In this respect, the device is no different from its counterparts. The same stylish, minimalistic and quite functional shell from LG is present here.

The bottom strip with keys for controlling the system can be configured in detail. You can change the background color from white to black and back, swap touch buttons, add new ones or remove old ones - in general, everything can be customized to suit you.

It’s great that the company is porting the interesting features of older devices to younger ones. I'm talking about a keyboard that can be customized in detail. You can customize the key block by changing the height, and thus the size of the buttons, as well as adding additional symbols, such as a comma or a question mark, depending on which one you use most often.

As always, you can lock your device not only with a password or pattern, but also with a special combination of several touches on different areas of the screen - Knock Code. The thing is very convenient and is only available on “ski” smartphones.

It’s more convenient for me to keep the screen on for a minute, but after the device reaches a 15 percent charge level and at some other point (we were unable to track this), everything returns to the original fifteen seconds. This behavior is observed on all products of the Korean company and personally it really bothers me.

Battery life

The device is equipped with a removable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1900 mAh. “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs,” this is the approach that obviously guided the engineers when creating the LG Leon. Weak hardware means you need to install a weak battery. Ultimately, we have the same standard operating time for a modern smartphone, be it a flagship or a simple dialer with Android on board. I mean one day with a fairly heavy load.

Of course, the device is capable of staying afloat for two days, and with gentle use (an hour and a half of screen operation) even more, but this is a ceiling. There is no need to hope for anything else.

Why doesn’t some manufacturer take and install a battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh in a smartphone that is weak in terms of hardware. This would be a truly competitive advantage. It is clear that there are thousands of nuances for this, the main of which are the thickness of the final product, the internal layout of parts, and so on. To solve all these problems, you will have to create a device from scratch, and not on the basis of something that already existed before. Rearrange parts, conduct hundreds of tests, and so on. However, work hard, damn it! People want long-lasting budget solutions and they are willing to vote for it with their money!

Bottom line

You can complete the review review mostly in a positive way. For example LG Leon it is clear that the company is focusing on design and ease of use. Characteristics fade into the background and guess what? This is not to say that this is a losing approach. Judge for yourself, Apple manages to successfully sell its smartphones even with hardware inside that is objectively behind its competitors. People don't need hundreds of megahertz and megapixels for a minimal or not very large amount of money. Comfort and style are important.

LG Leon meets all such expectations. Yes, it lacks a curved design, doesn't stand out due to its battery life, is quite thoughtful even when performing simple tasks, and yet it is well made. Often in the budget segment, manufacturers save on everything, including the emotional charge that the device carries. The result is something that leaves a lasting impression: “This smartphone was made only because the board of directors decided to enter the budget solutions segment. Moreover, this had to be done as soon as possible.” Samsung and smaller companies, such as Fly, often suffer from this approach, or more precisely, such results in the form of uninteresting, pass-through devices. It's great that LG isn't on this list.

Based on simple logic, we can assume that in the future TFT will displace this type of display from the mobile device market. The color evolution of such displays is quite extensive: from 16 to 65536 colors. Examples: Motorola V177 (128x160, 65K colors), Sony Ericsson J100i (96x64, 65K colors), Nokia 2310 (96x68, 65K colors).

UFB (Ultra Fine and Bright) - Liquid crystal displays with increased brightness and contrast on a passive matrix. We can say that this is an intermediate option between CSTN and TFT. This type of display boasts lower power consumption compared to TFT. For the most part, Samsung used such displays in mid-range phones. This type of display is not widely used. TN is one of the matrix types of TFT screens. Roughly speaking, TN are the simplest and cheapest TFT matrices. Viewing angles are the narrowest.

LG decided to start 2015 by updating its line of smartphones in the entry- and mid-price segment. Last year's models are being replaced by smartphones with curved screens LG Spirit and Magna and a simple budget phone Leon. We are already with the eldest of the new products, LG Magna, and today it is the turn of the most inexpensive model.

Design and usability

Compared to Magna and Spirit, LG Leon turned out to be the roundest. The model has rounded body contours and a convex lid. The case material, as usual, is plastic to look like metal.






The case thickness of 10.9 mm hints that this is an inexpensive model. The overall body dimensions are acceptable - 129.9 by 64.9 mm, the smartphone feels relatively compact, but the 4.5-inch screen has wide frames.


The black front panel is refreshed by a thin strip of plastic matching the color of the lid; above it is the usual manufacturer logo, screen, speaker and a set of sensors. The interface connector and the main microphone are located at the bottom, at the top end there is a headset jack and a second microphone for noise reduction.





The control keys are traditionally located on the back under the camera lens, but this time they are designed as part of the cover, without which you will not be able to turn on the smartphone. Without removing the battery, you can only install a memory card, and the two MicroSIM slots are located under the battery.



The build quality of the LG Leon is at the usual high level, all parts fit tightly together, there are no creaks or play. Since the model is compact, anyone can easily reach the top edge of the screen. The control buttons also turned out to be convenient. The volume keys are made of smooth plastic, they are slightly sunken and the finger fits perfectly into the recess. The power button, on the contrary, protrudes slightly – you won’t get confused.







Like the older models, there are three body colors to choose from: titanium, white and gold.

Display

LG Leon received a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels. The screen brightness can only be changed manually; there is no light sensor, as in most models from the manufacturer. The brightness adjustment range is from 6 to 256 cd/m2, the measured contrast is 1 in 805.





The quality of factory calibration is mediocre, but for relatively budget models this does not play a big role. Although the model is positioned as one of the most affordable in the line, it has a screen without an air gap, so the picture looks nice, at least there are noticeable positive changes compared to last year’s budget models. As strange as it may sound, from a color rendering point of view, I like the Leon’s screen more than the Magna’s display.



Another thing is that the screen also has disadvantages. The maximum brightness of the backlight is low, so on a sunny day you will have to peer a little at the screen and shield your hand from the bright sun. The oleophobic coating also did not appear, so fingerprints on the glass will be the eternal companions of the LG Leon buyer.

Hardware platform

After using Qualcomm Snapdragon 200/400, LG decided to take a closer look at MediaTek products. The first sign was , and today all new products use such chipsets. In the case of LG Leon, the manufacturer did not experiment and chose a time-tested solution - MediaTek MT6582 (4 Cortex-A7 cores, Mali-400 GPU). The amount of RAM is 768 MB, built-in memory is 4 GB plus a slot for memory cards.


Similar to Magna and Spirit, LG Leon runs Android 5.0.1 Lollipop with LG's proprietary UX interface. It is extremely interesting that the overall operating speed of the new product is better than that of its older brothers Magna and Spirit. Most likely, this is due to better optimization of the firmware for a specific model, which once again confirms the crudeness of the first versions of Android Lollipop. Overall, the Leon performs acceptably and is definitely faster than the LG Magna.

We did not notice any problems with the stability of Wi-Fi or GPS.

Telephone functionality is implemented at the usual level. Two SIM cards operate on the basis of one radio module, and a special on-screen key is allocated to switch between cards.

The smartphone has loud speakers and a noticeable vibration alert, so it will be difficult to miss a call or not hear the interlocutor even in noisy conditions.

Working hours

The removable battery of the review hero has a capacity of 1900 mAh, which is enough for two days of work under average load, including constant data synchronization, communication in instant messengers and social networks. In terms of operating time, Leon does not present any surprises - its battery life corresponds to a good average level for similar devices.

Cameras

LG Leon received two cameras. The main one has a resolution of 5 megapixels, it is equipped with autofocus and flash, the maximum video resolution is FullHD. Front camera with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels.





















The quality of the main camera is usual for inexpensive smartphones. It will be enough to photograph a static scene as a keepsake, when the presence of the photo itself is more important, and not its quality. The camera is also suitable for everyday use, for example, if there is a need to photograph an advertisement or other text.

The front camera, even despite the presence of special selfie shooting modes, is present in the smartphone purely nominally - from a module with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels you should not expect anything more than a portrait that you will look like.

Results

LG Leon looks like an improved budget phone from 2013/2014. It’s easy to imagine that the company took a classic, inexpensive device for $100, replaced the chipset with a more powerful one, added a little RAM and a better screen. From this point of view, we have a rather successful device, the traditional bonus of which is a high-quality body, normal battery life and good speakers - this is what smartphones of large brands often distinguish.

In terms of cost, Leon turns out to be less attractive, because its $140 turns into 3299 recommended hryvnia. The model finds itself at the very beginning of the middle price range, where users pay more attention to characteristics and less to the brand. If you are simply choosing a smartphone for making calls from a well-known company, then the LG Leon may be suitable for you; it will be more interesting than some offers from Samsung or HTC, but if you are going to use the smartphone for its intended purpose, installing programs, then it is better to choose a more productive option for the same money .
